Why isn't the course just a "Certificate in Dog Training"?
In 2000, the Delta Society became an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) under the National Training Framework, and developed the first accredited course for dog training instructors, the Certificate IV in Dog Behavioural Training (Canine Good CitizenTM).
In 2004, the Rural Training Council (the national body which oversaw the development of all animal related courses) reviewed the national Veterinary Nursing Training Package and after extensive national consultation with all industry sectors, decided to incorporate a broad range of animal care vocations including dog training. As the only RTO which was offering a course in this area at the time, Delta was invited to participate to ensure that an appropriate training path for dog trainers was included and the competencies on training classes and private consultations were written to cover the information we supplied as being industry standard. In 2005, Delta began to offer this nationally accredited course and as a result were required to use the title designated in the training package, the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services.
In 2010 a new Animal Care and Management National Training Package has been developed and, as an industry leader, Delta has again had significant input. We are now offering the new Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services.
So is the Delta course an accredited course for dog trainers? It certainly is - the only one which currently exists under the National Animal Care and Management Training Package!
