First Block of Assignments
After you have attended the compulsory weekend seminar, we hope we have whetted your appetite for more.
The aim of this segment is to give you the knowledge and skills to become a successful companion dog trainer – you do not necessarily need to own your own dog but must have access to a dog to put your learning into practice and demonstrate your skills.
You will become involved in an exciting program of reading and research which will be supported by telephone and email access to your lecturers, web conferencing sessions and a discussion group with your fellow students.
On enrolment you will be provided with course notes on disk, a Student Handbook and you will need to puchase the student training manual which is supported by a DVD. The Student handbook will provide you with detailed information on assignments, a comprehensive timetable for submission of your assignments as well as information on extensions, deferrals and withdrawals should this prove necessary.
The following topics will be included:
- Dog behaviour
- Learning theory
- Dog breeds and behaviour
- Dog health and first aid
- Basic training exercises for companion dogs
- Training complex behaviours using targeting
- Training other species
- Professional practices (in which you examine all aspects of the companion animal industry which relate to keeping dogs)
What support will I get through part of the course?
Delta recognises that support is paramount to the completion of courses which are delivered by distance education. To make full use of this support, you will need access to a computer and fast internet access but you do not need to be a computer expert.
Whilst undertaking this group of assignments, you will have access to experts in the field of dog training that will give you support throughout the course. This support is paramount to the completion of this course and you should use what is provided to help you achieve your goals.
