6 Day Workshop

Once you have completed the seminar and course work, you will be ready to continue the practical component of the course.

What happens at the workshop?
The 6 day workshop program is conducted in New South Wales. For those who need to travel to attend, we will provide you with a list of accommodation facilities that may be suitable for you and are in reasonable proximity to the venue.  Those who live locally can travel to the venues on a daily basis as the workshop/s are conducted during the day.   As it is important that students receive hands on practical instruction on positive training methods with dogs at the workshop program, a venue has been selected where dogs can come in on some days with their owners.  We have also decided to visit an animal welfare organisation, so that students can obtain a variety of hands on experience using different dogs and other animals to develop their skills.

The Sydney workshop program is held at two venues, the main lectures and some hands-on at the Veterinary Science Conference Centre, UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY and the remainder at an animal welfare organisation to be advised closer to the date.  As this workshop normally has bigger class sizes and to accommodate more students you may be split into groups. A workshop timetable will be provided to you closer to the date.

Can I bring my dog?
As dogs are required to attend on some of the days of the workshop program, we will, closer to the date, send information to all students so that they can determine the suitability of this experience for their dog. Dogs will be chosen to attend based on a range of factors like the dog’s age and temperament and the distance of travel for the student.  Not all dogs will be suitable for this segment of the course. Based on information that is provided to us, we will assist you to determine whether attendance is advisable for your dog, whose welfare is our prime concern. A high level of training is not necessary but all dogs attending must have reasonably good manners, be trained to walk on a loose lead and to remain calmly in a crate or on a mat.

However, if you require an assistance dog to attend the workshop with you, you will need to provide Delta Society Australia Limited with documentary evidence that your assistance dog has been assessed and/or certified as such by an approved/certified assistance dog training organisation in the state in which you attend the workshop. The documentary evidence must be provided along with your registration form. This certification will then be provided to the workshop venue. Any decision to allow an assistance dog to maintain attendance at a workshop will be made by the venue provider.

Delta Society Australia promotes the use of humane training methods and equipment and the use of aversive equipment is prohibited at the workshop programs.  Dogs will be required to attend on flat collars, martingale collars, harnesses and/or head collars.  This course will not be suitable for those who use and promote check chains and other punishment based equipment.  Additional information will be available closer to the workshop program.  At the workshop program, you will be required to undertake training in areas such as OH&S, behaviour observations, teaching strategies for people and dogs, writing and developing lesson plans, ethics and environmental enrichment. There will be practical elements that will be assessed at the workshop program that will contribute to your overall assessment in the Certificate IV course such as public speaking, fitting equipment and conducting classes. These may be daunting but our supportive staff will be there to assist you along the way.

How much will the workshop cost?
This part of the course can be paid upfront or in conjunction with the first block of assignments payment (instalment plan). The cost for the workshop is $1,725. You should note this fee and may be tax deductible and does not attract GST.
