PROGRAMS

Delta Dog Safeâ„¢ is a targeted community education program providing practical ways young children and their families can reduce the incidence of dog bite. The program is delivered to children aged between four and eight years in schools and child care centres across Tasmania. Children are provided with simple messages about dog behaviour and how to stay safe around dogs.

Volunteer presenters are specially trained to deliver ‘dog friendly’ school and parent education programs. Lessons have been developed by animal behaviourist and education specialists to be age appropriate for primary school children.

Topics include how to read dogs’ body language, how to react in certain situations and how to safely greet and play with dogs.  The program includes interaction and role play with non-threatening soft toy dogs, so that children who are frightened of dogs can participate without feeling afraid.

Dog Safe is currently available only in Tasmania.
